The city of Durham and county of Northumberland combined to organise a race meeting in the mid-1800s. The meeting took place on Tuesday 1st April 1845 in the neighbourhood of Newcastle upon Tyne. The start was on the north western verge of the extensive moor granted to the Herbage Committee but owned by the Corporation. After several fences the course ran by the side of the Ponteland road and then completed an elliptical circuit. There was an immense crowd to see the Scurry Stakes won by Mr D Cookson’s Rufus, beating Kitten and Bucket, but the main attraction was the Steeplechase. An impressive field faced the starter and it was won by Mr W H Fife’s The Snipe. There are no further records of such a joint meeting being arranged. |
